Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
At least 16 people were arrested across Assam for allegedly violating the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, by illegally slaughtering cows during Eid-ul-Zuha. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said multiple cases were reported from five districts — Kamrup Metro, Dhubri, Hojai, Cachar, and Sribhumi — where police discovered suspected cow body parts and illegal slaughter sites. One such incident occurred near Guwahati's Cotton University, triggering statewide concern.
In Cachar and Sribhumi districts alone, police arrested seven and nine individuals respectively, booking them under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the state’s cattle preservation law. The Act prohibits cow slaughter and beef sale within five kilometres of temples or satras, and in areas with Hindu, Jain, or Sikh majorities. Officials confirmed five illegal slaughter spots were shut down during the crackdown. Community groups like VHP and Bajrang Dal had flagged suspected activities, prompting swift police action.
